Serve a Sexy Dinner with A Romantic Movie
Dinner and a romantic movie...the quintessential date.
Thousands of couples have used this time-honored method...eyes
gazing over tempting plates, holding hands under the
table or in a dark movie theater, mesmerized by the
action on the screen and the steaming body heat of their
partner. The classic combination of dinner and a movie
appeals to all of our senses, connecting us to one another
in a shared experience. Enjoying a reel with a meal
at home expands the experience to a truly intimate one,
where the nuances of the meal and the innuendos of the
movie can be discussed while the play is on pause.
My favorite romantic movies include 'My
Big Fat Greek Wedding',
for a funny and lighthearted experience. Serve it with
a meal just as easy going, hummus sandwiches on pita
bread with radicchio and perhaps an ouzo toast! For
"romanza di italia" check out 'Big
Night'
and find that famous timballi recipe in 'Essentials
of Classic Italian Cooking'.
Stir up a champagne cocktail with a splash of Cointreau
and enter "Rick's Cafe American" in 'Casablanca'.
Prepare to feast on romance and intrigue while you serve
a Moroccan menu from 'The
Slow Mediterranean Kitchen : Recipes for the Passionate
Cook'.
Or escape to exotic Brazil in 'Woman
on Top',
shake up a caipirinha and steam fresh fish in banana
leaves for the full effect of the film.

Emma
(1996)
This delightfully fun and lighthearted comedy is based
on the story that inspired the hit movie CLUELESS! Dazzling
Gwyneth Paltrow (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS)
shines as EMMA, a mischievous young beauty who sets up
her single friends. Funny thing is ... she's not very
good at it! So when Emma tries to find a man for Harriet
(Toni Collette -- THE SIXTH SENSE, ABOUT A BOY), she makes
a hilariously tangled mess of everyone's lives. You'll
enjoy all the comic confusion ... until Emma herself falls
in love, finally freeing everyone from her outrageously
misguided attempts at matchmaking.
When
Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Nora Ephron wrote the brisk screenplay for this 1989 romantic
comedy, director Rob Reiner made a nicely glossy New York
story (very much in a Woody Allen vein) out of it, and
Billy Crystal's unstoppable charm made it something really
special. Crystal and Meg Ryan play longtime platonic friends
who keep dancing around their deeper feelings for one
another, and Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are their respective
pals who fall in love and get married. Ryan doesn't get
a lot of funny material, but her performance is typically
alive and intuitive, and she more than holds her own with
Crystal's comic motor mouth and sweet sentimentality.
Reiner is on comfortable ground, liberated from the burden
of making serious statements in the lead-footed manner
of subsequent features. --Tom Keogh
